Interesting how the Flemish artists from the Renaissance depict Bethlehem as a Northern European Flemish village, rather than an Eastern Mediterranean Judea village. [See e.g., Cornelis Massijs (no. 4), Adriaen Collaert (No. 5), Abel Grimmer (No. 21).]

They painted what they knew, in a format familiar to their audience. Kinda creepy, to me. Whereas both Tissot and Brassey Hole journeyed to the Holy Land precisely so they could present an authentic vision.

They painted what they knew, in a format familiar to their audience.For that very reason, artists during that time period depicted Christ as lily white when he was most likely olive skin or darker.

Yes. It's hilarious to see the golden curls and ballgowns with which they adorned Egyptian women, for example in paintings about pulling baby Moses out of the Nile.
